Optimism and Perseverance in Partner Search at Consonance (Gleichklang)

These results are encouraging and allow the following conclusions about partner search for senior men and women at Consonance:

  • Singles aged 60+, singles aged 70+, and singles aged 80+ have the same chances of successful matchmaking as younger singles.

For senior men and women, it is also clear that partner search often takes a longer time. However, senior men and women who stick with their partner search usually eventually reach their goal.

Perseverance is therefore important. This succeeds when you consciously understand the principle of partner search at Consonance from the start:

  • It is exclusively about you meeting the right person one day, with whom a meaningful partnership and loving relationship develops. If you orient yourself toward this goal, your partner search will very likely be successful.
  • Partner search in old age is not a quick bargain. But when senior men and women approach their online partner search with commitment, activity, and patience, they will usually achieve success.

Special Features of Partner Search for Seniors at Consonance (Gleichklang)

The success rates of older singles at least correspond to the success rates of middle-aged and younger singles in online dating.

However, in our now more than 16 years of matchmaking experience, we have also observed some special features for the matchmaking and partner search of senior men and women:

  • The number of partner suggestions is significantly lower than for members in middle age. The decrease in partner suggestions for partner search begins at age 60, intensifies from age 70, and then increases again significantly from age 80. So older singles receive fewer partner suggestions at Consonance than younger singles.

Online Dating for Women and Men in Later Life at Consonance (Gleichklang)

The number of partner suggestions decreases particularly strongly for women in later life. This is due to three factors:

  • Women have a significantly longer life expectancy on average than men. Most people in later life are married. Most search for a partnership again because partners die, others after separations. But since women typically live longer, there are more and more female singles than male singles with increasing age. This also affects the matchmaking service at Consonance. Because with us too, the proportion of male singles decreases with increasing age. This is unchangeable, and we all must therefore accept this situation and deal with it as best as possible in our partner search.
  • Men who become single in later life often look for a new partnership after a very short time. As a result, they are often somewhat younger at the start of their partner search than older women, who sometimes wait years before starting their online partner search. This leads to a further relative decrease in male singles in later life.
  • Older men also often look for younger or at most same-aged female partners. While women around 40 or 50 often still consider significantly older partners, this tolerance toward older partners decreases considerably for women from age 60 onward. Women aged 70+ or women aged 80+ often look for slightly younger to at most same-aged men. One underlying reason for this is that senior women do not want to fall into a caretaker role. But since both women and men in later life look for rather younger people, the overlap area in the matchmaking service decreases.

The good news remains that despite all these factors, ultimately the chances of our senior men and women in partner search are good.

This means that seniors succeed better in making more out of fewer suggestions. Senior men and women in partner search tend to engage more with individual suggestions, explore the possibility for a relationship more seriously, and when there is a good fit, they are also more willing to actually take the step toward starting a relationship.

Partner search in later life is therefore different, but no less promising. It is important that singles in later life understand the special features of partner search in senior age and are thereby motivated to persevere until they succeed in their partner search.

Partner Search and Independence at Consonance (Gleichklang)

We observe in our matchmaking service that singles in later life become more open to relationship models that emphasize greater independence. Senior men and women with us are more interested in long-distance relationships and relationships with separate apartments in the same location (Living Apart Together). They mostly want to keep finances separate, and they more often state that they want to remain independent.

Singles in later life usually already look back on a relationship history. Many have adult children and grandchildren. Even though this can give them a great deal of social embeddedness, they still want a loving relationship with partners on equal footing. For this loving relationship, many senior men and women desire a rather high degree of mutual autonomy and freedom. Only rarely do they want to marry again, and quite often they want to continue living separately. Traveling together is particularly often mentioned as a desired lifestyle model by singles in later life.

But of course, there are also people in later life who want to marry, move in together, and lead very symbiotic relationships. Likewise, there are singles at an advanced age who are not or only slightly embedded in family connections, who have no children or grandchildren.

At Consonance, we survey the lifestyle models and relationship ideas of our members very precisely. This enables us to provide effective matchmaking for singles in senior age by bringing them together with people with whom they can live the relationship they desire.

Loneliness, Friendships, and Partnerships at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Loneliness in old age is an important topic, and studies show that loneliness increases among singles with increasing age. Online dating offers senior men and women a way to do something about loneliness in old age and to experience new love once again. New partnerships in later or advanced age improve life satisfaction and can even increase physical and mental health.

But there are also people in later or advanced age who want contact but not a partnership in the true sense. For these seniors, Consonance offers the option of a psychological friendship search, which also includes a travel partner search. In the friendship search, members can decide for themselves whether friendship is always platonic for them or whether they would like to include sexuality.

Safety in Partner Search in Later Life at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Another central theme in later life is safety. Love scammers and romance fraudsters especially try to exploit older women, causing them emotional and financial harm.

At Consonance, we have taken extensive measures to identify and block love scammers as quickly as possible. We manually check every profile completely, and we also run automated security programs. We also warn our members when we identify love scammers. Additionally, we educate on how singles can effectively protect themselves from love scammers in their partner search. Here is the most important recommendation:

  • Stay on our platforms initially for getting to know each other, and end any contact immediately if the slightest request for money arises!

With the help of these measures, we can offer senior men and women a safe online partner search at Consonance.

LGBTQIA+ Community and Partner Search for Older Adults at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Especially in later life, some life topics can become more conscious again. Some seniors also develop a longing to catch up on something once more. This is especially true in the area of LGBTQIA+ partner search and community. Accordingly, this applies to the various forms of gender identity and sexual orientation summarized under the term queer.

At Consonance, we enable singles in later or advanced age to set off for new shores once again and find the lifestyle and love that matters to them.

back

Housing Projects and Communities at Consonance (Gleichklang)

“How will we live later?” is another important topic for many singles (but also for couples) in later and advanced age. In addition to our matchmaking service for seniors and our friendship matching service for seniors, Consonance offers community contact lists.

Here you can search for lifestyles, communities, or projects or start such projects. Intergenerational living or senior shared apartments are important topics here that you can approach and implement in this way.

Health and Impairments at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Staying active and health are very important topics in later and advanced age. At Consonance, couples come together who want to work on their health together, adopt a physically and mentally beneficial lifestyle, and go through life together. This also includes topics of ecology and sustainability, which play a central role for many Consonance members.

But of course, there are also illnesses and impairments that singles in later or advanced age may be affected by. At Consonance, we make every effort to enable an effective partner search even for senior men and women affected by chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, disabilities, or impairments.

We do this through the application of our acceptance principle in the matchmaking service. We ask all our members about existing impairments and also ask them whether they are willing to engage with a person as a partner who is affected by these impairments. With the help of this acceptance principle, we succeed in enabling even singles in advanced age who are affected by impairments to begin a new loving relationship and meaningful friendships.

Romantic Relationships in Old Age

“Just briefly in between before the final departure,” described a very elderly Consonance member, an artist, who felt a “sudden desire” for online dating. Advanced age and even the oldest age do not have to stand in the way of online dating.

A study surveyed seniors who participated in online dating. It compared their dating behavior with that of younger individuals. The study yielded the following interesting findings:

  • The response rate of older singles to profiles was higher than the response rates of younger singles. The older singles were also more willing to actually meet the people they met online. Finally, the older singles in online dating more frequently cited “partner search” as a motive than the younger participants in online dating.

These findings are very well suited to explain once again why the chances of successful partner search for our older members are just as high as for younger members, even though there are fewer suggestions.

At the same time, another interesting finding emerged from the study:

  • The surveyed seniors were significantly more dissatisfied with the possibilities of offline partner search than the surveyed younger singles, who more often met other people for their partner search, e.g., in bars or through friends.

The study also showed that the times when older people were ashamed to participate in online partner search are apparently over:

  • 70% of the surveyed singles in senior age stated that they talk to family members and friends about their online partner search.

A qualitative study by Coupland examined the free self-descriptions of seniors who were online in search of a partner. The aim was to analyze the self-perception and search motives of older singles:

  • The older singles showed a high degree of modesty in their profile texts, less emphasis on sexual motives, and a greater emphasis on leisure motives and other social motives.
  • At the same time, older singles definitely also seek sexuality. Sexuality is an important and natural part of later life. But seniors in partner search are less likely to emphasize sexual motives. They emphasize more the friendly-companionable, life-accompanying, and also advisory character of the relationships they seek.

Young-at-Heart Older Singles at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Another central theme of partner search in later life is being young at heart. Seniors in partner search tend to emphasize in their free texts that they have remained young despite increasing chronological age.

What do older people want to tell us with this?

  • They want to express their authentic inner experience that even with increasing age, the full social, romantic, and life-related needs are still present. They want to express this with their focus on “young at heart” because society tends to deny older people these very needs.
  • Being young at heart and health are important to older people in partner search. However, most are aware that they also have to deal with possible health impairments in their life planning and relationship planning.

But how to deal with health problems that already exist or may arise in the future?

  • It is crucial for older singles to speak openly about these topics and thus achieve an integration of these topics into their future relationships and life planning.
  • It is also helpful to recognize the many compensation options for health problems and to actively use them so that the fear of the future can be overcome. The challenges of old age can be better managed together. Partnerships and friendships also make a significant contribution to quality of life in later life.

Love Motives in Later Life at Consonance (Gleichklang)

In a study by Watson and colleagues, which examined the love stories of seniors aged 65 to 80, a comparable significance of romance, sexuality, and sociability emerged as in other age groups.

At the same time, there was also an increased appreciation of independence in later life. Especially for senior women after previous marriages, it was important to maintain their own independence in their current relationships and thereby distinguish these relationships from previous ones.

Seniors in partner search usually do not simply want to repeat their previous partnerships, but in their new relationships they seek care, companionship, and eroticism as well as independence and autonomy.

5 Types of Relationships in Senior Age at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Below I will present the five basic dimensions identified by Su-Fei Huang and colleagues as a kind of typology of relationships that develop in later life:

  • Su-Fei Huang and colleagues examined couples in later life and were able to reveal a high degree of diversity as well as important convergences.

They identified five forms of relationships in later life:

  1. Shared Sociability as a Couple: These couples are primarily concerned with shared leisure activities and interests and enjoying them together. In this type, sexuality played a rather minor role.
  2. Stable Bonding and Care: For these couples, the stability of the bond is paramount, which can even lead to remarriage. Permanence and care are the central aspects, and with these couples, sexuality also plays a rather subordinate role.
  3. Sexual-Romantic Togetherness: These couples experience love and romance as something completely different from friendship and care. They emphasize the irreplaceable characteristics of loving relationships that cannot be compensated for by any friends or family members. Physical closeness, tenderness, and sexuality play an important role.
  4. Environment-Dependent Ambivalence: These respondents experienced an ambivalence or contradiction between their connections to family and friends and to their relationship. Although they also strove for partnership, overcoming loneliness, and romantic experiences, they were concerned that this might endanger their family and other social contacts, or they placed value on carefully weighing things.
  5. Bonding in Mutual Independence: Partnership and romance are important, but both sides place the greatest value on maintaining independence economically and physically.

Consonance as a Matchmaking Service for Senior Men and Women at Consonance (Gleichklang)

With our matchmaking service, we enable older singles to reflect on their relationship desires, life situation, existing social contacts, and life goals and to derive their search criteria from them. In the matchmaking service, we can thus ensure that those people who can actually build a common relationship foundation with each other are introduced.

Especially for senior men and women, our approach of effective matchmaking with psychological principles is of particular importance. In contrast, a number of younger people are more drawn to dating apps. Because there, the focus is less on finding a sustainable life community or partnership, but rather on implementing heterogeneous motives, which consist of a desire for experiences, trend orientation, self-validation, or casual erotic contacts.

In our matchmaking service, by contrast, it is the common interest of the participating singles to meet each other on equal footing and with seriousness in order to build lasting relationships together.

Love Knows No Age at Consonance (Gleichklang)

There are older people who forego partner search in favor of their existing non-romantic social contacts (children, grandchildren, etc.), and sometimes even in favor of their already deceased life partners. Of course, seniors can consciously and clearly decide against a partnership. If this decision against partner search and partnership is not painful, it is an expression of autonomy and personal priorities that must be recognized.

Sometimes, however, seniors decide against a renewed partner search out of guilt or feelings of obligation. Here, the decision is accompanied by an actually painful renunciation that is unnecessary.

Ultimately, for people of all ages – and thus of course also for seniors – the majority cannot be fully replaced by social connections with a romantic partnership. The need for romantic-intimate and connected closeness is more strongly fulfilled in partnership relationships than in other social connections.

Our evaluations of the experiences of our members in senior age make clear that renouncing partner search in senior age is not necessary.

Older singles have the same prospects for a new relationship in online dating as younger singles. At the same time, most older singles have just as strong a need for partnership as younger singles.
