Matchmaking and Dating for People with Mental Illnesses at Consonance (Gleichklang)

With our alternative and psychologically founded matchmaking platform, we make it easier for people with mental illnesses and emotional distress to find a partner. Our online dating not only enables effective matchmaking, but also the search for friendships, travel companions, projects and communities, partners for leisure activities, regional groups and meeting points, or professional collaborations and development.

In this way, we support people with mental disorders and emotional illnesses in all areas of their social networking – from dating and building friendships to professional collaborations and finding projects and communities.

Social support is an important factor for people with mental disorders and emotional illnesses in terms of their emotional stability, life satisfaction, and psychological recovery. At the same time, people with mental disorders and impairments are particularly often affected by loneliness and isolation. They often find it especially difficult to search for a partner, friendships, and social connections.

This is where we step in at Consonance by offering people with mental disorders an effective form of online matchmaking and friendship matching.

The Acceptance Principle of Matchmaking and Friendship Matching at Consonance (Gleichklang)

The special support for people with mental disorders and emotional illnesses in their search for a partner and friends is provided at Consonance through the principle of acceptance. We also apply this matching principle of acceptance to support people with disabilities, handicaps, and chronic physical illnesses, sexual dysfunctions, HIV or AIDS, and autistics, who also report difficulties in dating and finding friends via online dating:

  • We ask all our members whether they have a mental disorder or emotional impairment. Those affected can also indicate whether it is a severe, everyday-shaping disorder or a less severe one.
  • Mental disorders or emotional illnesses include, among others: psychotic disorders and disorders from the schizophrenia spectrum, depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders such as simple phobias (e.g., claustrophobia), panic disorders, agoraphobia, social phobias), obsessive-compulsive disorders (compulsive acts, obsessive thoughts), adjustment disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative disorders, somatoform disorders such as somatoform pain disorder or hypochondria, burnout (neurasthenia), eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia or binge-eating disorder), sleep disorders, addiction problems (problems with alcohol or drugs, or also e.g., gambling addiction), as well as personality disorders such as avoidant personality disorder (anxious-avoidant personality disorder), dependent personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
  • We also ask all our members whether they are willing to enter into a partnership or friendship with a person with a mental disorder. If this question is answered affirmatively, we additionally ask whether it may also be a severe mental disorder that strongly shapes everyday life.
  • The affected members with mental disorders decide for themselves whether they want their mental disorder or emotional illness to be taken into account by us in the matchmaking or friendship matching or not. If they wish for this consideration, dating and friendship seekers with mental disorders receive suggestions where acceptance and appreciation are already given from the start.

Successful Dating Is Possible

Members with mental disorders in online dating are not excluded at Consonance; on the contrary, they can experience a high degree of acceptance, recognition, and appreciation, which promotes their social networking and the building of loving relationships and friendships.

Our evaluations show that we can indeed provide our members with mental disorders with effective dating and friendship matching.

With this special form of matchmaking and friendship matching for people with mental disorders and emotional illnesses, we consciously set an accent against mainstream dating, which is dominated by large dating apps, singles sites, and online matchmaking services. This mainstream online dating marginalizes those who do not fit the normative image of “healthy and stable”.

At Consonance, we place value on inclusion and diversity. We regard people with mental disorders and emotional illnesses as a valuable and fully accepted part of our dating community.

No Marginal Issue: Some Figures on Mental Disorders

The ignorance that people with mental illnesses often encounter in online dating is remarkable given the frequency of mental illnesses over a lifetime. To illustrate, for example, the following lifetime prevalences (probability of developing the respective disorder at some point) exist:

Approximately one in two people will, according to the results of a study from Germany, develop a mental disorder at some point in their lives. More than one in four people will develop an addiction problem, almost one in six an anxiety disorder, one in eight a somatoform disorder, and also one in eight a depression or bipolar disorder. Within a single year, about 27.8% of the adult population in Germany are acutely affected by a mental disorder, which corresponds to 17.8 million people.

Mental disorders are anything but rare – they affect about every second person at some point in their lives. This makes it all the more incomprehensible that this topic plays virtually no role in online dating, and that large dating apps and matchmaking services convey the impression that there are no people with emotional illnesses or that their conditions are irrelevant to their search for a partner. According to studies, people with mental illnesses are particularly often affected by loneliness. Thus, online dating could potentially be of especially high importance for these individuals.

Unfortunately, however, studies show that typical online dating, as offered via dating apps and online matchmaking services, often leads to a further deterioration of the well-being of people suffering from affective disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder. Presumably, this is due to the ignorance of dating apps and online matchmaking services regarding the needs of people with mental illnesses. By focusing on acceptance and appreciation in our matching, we aim to counteract possible negative effects of online dating for our members with mental illnesses and maximize their chances of success.

Mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety disorders are also associated with higher separation and divorce rates. With our matching based on acceptance and willingness to constructively deal with the challenges of a mental illness, as well as the fit of lifestyles, values, and life goals, we counteract separations and support the building of happy and stable partnerships.

What Complicates Online Dating for People with Mental Illnesses?

On the one hand, people with mental disorders often find it difficult to approach others, make contact, maintain and sustain relationships, which can contribute to social isolation and being single.

On the other hand, there is also the problem that many people in our society unfortunately tend to withdraw from people with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, or psychoses. Many shy away from a partnership with a mentally ill, emotionally ill, or mentally disabled person, although this may also be due to their own overwhelm.

How We Make Dating Easier for People with Mental Illnesses

For both sides, it is important that there is a good mutual handling of the mental illness and that the illness does not stand in the way of shared happiness as a couple.

For effective matchmaking for singles with mental illnesses, it is therefore essential that the situation is dealt with openly from the very beginning and that those individuals find each other for whom the mental illness is not an obstacle to a fulfilling relationship.

With our acceptance-based matching, we enable singles with mental illnesses not only effective but also much more relaxed dating than on dating apps or other online matchmaking services that do not take their special situation into account. The same applies to building friendships.
