Online Dating, Partner Search, and Sexual Dysfunctions at Consonance (Gleichklang)

Acceptance as the Foundation for Relationship Success

Consonance (Gleichklang) is the only platform in the German-speaking region for partner search that systematically integrates people with sexual dysfunctions into its matchmaking concept and thus increases their chances of finding a relationship.

Our special form of matchmaking combines value-oriented dating with an acceptance principle:

  • We explicitly ask all members whether they can imagine a partnership with someone who suffers from a sexual dysfunction. This willingness is conclusively taken into account when bringing people together. In this way, we enable openness and authenticity, prevent painful rejections, and help overcome fears and inhibitions. Partner search does not take place in a mode of concealment, but on the basis of openness and acceptance.

Under these conditions, it is not uncommon for Consonance relationships to experience significant relief and sometimes even an improvement or complete regression of sexual dysfunctions:

Prevalence and Forms of Sexual Dysfunctions

Almost one-third of adults suffer at least temporarily from sexual dysfunctions. These include erectile dysfunction (erectile dysfunction, colloquially impotence), premature orgasm (premature ejaculation, ejaculatio praecox), delayed or absent orgasm (orgasmic disorder, anorgasmia), pain during intercourse (dyspareunia), painful cramping of the pelvic floor muscles (vaginismus), and reduced sexual desire (libido disorder).

These medical terms describe certain physical or psychosexual phenomena. However, they say nothing about the ability to love or suitability for a stable partnership.

Sexual dysfunctions do not necessarily have to play a negative role for sexual satisfaction or partner happiness:

  • With openness, love, freedom from shame and concealment, a satisfying sexuality is always possible. Because sexuality is not just intercourse, but there are diverse possibilities of sexual pleasure and gratification.

Critical Assessment of the Term “Sexual Dysfunction”

The term “sexual dysfunction” is basically already to be viewed critically:

  • The term presupposes a normative expectation of how physical and sexual processes should proceed. In reality, however, there are diverse variations and varieties of sexual responses.

Sexuality must by no means be reduced purely to bodily functions. It arises in interaction with the environment, with relationships, with communication, and with specific sexual practices. Also in the context of dating and relationship initiation, it becomes clear that emotional security, trust, and mutual appreciation are decisive factors for sexual satisfaction.

Distinction from Asexuality and Lack of Sexual Experience

Sexual dysfunctions are clearly to be distinguished from so-called asexuality:

  • Asexuality is not a sexual dysfunction. Asexual people do not want sexuality and do not suffer from it.

Likewise, there are people who do not suffer from a sexual dysfunction but have never had sexuality with another person, although they would like to:

  • These so-called Absolute Beginners are in a specific biographical situation and are also specifically supported in their partner search.

Here too, sensitive matchmaking creates a framework in which openness is possible.

How Shame and Avoidance Worsen the Problem

Without an acceptance-based approach and without a sex-positive attitude, sexual dysfunctions can become real relationship problems – especially when they are concealed during dating or hidden out of fear of rejection. Some then no longer feel up to dating, some withdraw, escape into addictive consumption of pornography:

  • A woman who experiences pain during sexuality, for example due to vaginismus or dyspareunia, may develop fear of intercourse, feel ashamed, and not talk about it with her partner. This exacerbates the problem. Lack of openness creeps in, and the desire to avoid sexuality is interpreted by the partner as rejection.
  • A man with erectile dysfunction feels ashamed and avoids sexual encounters and romantic relationships. He becomes unhappy as a result, while improvement does not occur.
  • Another man reaches orgasm too quickly (premature ejaculation, ejaculatio praecox). He experiences this as stressful and develops performance pressure. Without openness, the problem persists.

Acceptance as an Effective Solution in Matchmaking

Through our acceptance-based dating, we can support our members in avoiding or overcoming all these problems and bringing their partner search to success:

  • We bring together people who know from the outset that they can talk openly with each other and do not have to hide.

This makes dating a process in which transparency and mutual respect are at the forefront. On this basis, trust develops. What is blocked under pressure, fear, and concealment can unfold:

  • Love, partnership, and fulfilling sexuality become possible – regardless of which individual sexual peculiarity exists.

So no one needs to be afraid, and all members can communicate openly and authentically with each other, get in touch, and develop their relationships.

We are committed to ensuring that all people find love and interpersonal happiness. This corresponds to the special alternative and socio-ecological as well as emancipatory approach of the online dating offered by Consonance.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Acceptance as the Foundation of Our Matchmaking

Consonance stands not only for acceptance regarding sexual dysfunctions, but fundamentally for diversity and inclusion in partner search. We specifically support people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, mental illnesses, or also HIV and AIDS in finding a partner and building stable relationships.

Here too, the acceptance principle makes a decisive contribution:

  • Even within the framework of matchmaking, openness is made possible and transparency is promoted. This creates an environment in which special characteristics do not have to be concealed but are respectfully taken into account. This attitude significantly increases the effectiveness of matchmaking because contacts are based on realistic expectations and mutual acceptance.

Especially in dating, it becomes clear how important such a framework is:

  • Encounters are more relaxed when people know they are accepted with their personal circumstances.

Consonance (Gleichklang) is also open to all genders and gender identities as well as all sexual orientations. In an atmosphere of openness, authenticity, and acceptance, we accompany our members’ partner search and contribute to enabling sustainable and fulfilling partnerships to develop:
