Online Dating with Gender Fluidity

At Consonance (Gleichklang), supporting the partner search for people with gender fluidity, genderflux, and fluidflux is close to our hearts as part of our queer matchmaking service.

Members who identify this way can select non-binary and then describe their fluidity in the designated free-text field.

In the matchmaking process, people with gender fluidity will receive suggestions specifically from those who are themselves searching for non-binary individuals.

The free-text field, where members describe their experience in more detail, creates a deeper impression so that compatible people can connect.

The free-text field can also include terms like Genderfae, Genderfaun, Genderflor, Genderflux, and Fluidflux to help classify and explain one’s own experience. This makes effective online dating possible for people with gender fluidity.

We recommend, however, explaining these terms in your own dating profile and illustrating them based on your personal experience. Not everyone is familiar with these terms.

Depending on their own orientation, people with high gender fluidity may be interested in different genders in their partner search:

  • Some seek other non-binary and genderfluid individuals, such as those with genderflux or fluidflux, or Genderfae, Genderfaun, or Genderflor. Likewise, people with gender fluidity may also be interested in binary men or women, Trans* individuals, agender people, libragender individuals, xenogender individuals, or, in the sense of a pansexual or omnisexual search, be interested in all genders.

What is Gender Fluidity?

We all fluctuate in how strongly we perceive ourselves as a particular gender at any given moment. There are times when we are very aware that we identify, for example, as a man, woman, non-binary, or agender. But there are also moments when this gender identification does not play a role for us.

Furthermore, we also fluctuate in how strongly we embody, for example, masculine, feminine, or non-binary traits at a particular time. Men also have feminine or non-binary moments, women have masculine or non-binary moments, and so on.

As humans, we are therefore so complex that pure category assignment does not say everything about us; rather, fluctuations and differentiations also occur within our person.

Gender fluidity is thus a general phenomenon. However, there are individual differences in how strong and pronounced this gender fluidity is. For some people, it occurs only rarely and weakly; for others, often and strongly. This can go so far that gender fluidity is in the foreground and significantly shapes a person’s gender identity.

People also differ regarding the typical direction and nature of their gender fluidity:

  • Some people fluctuate in the intensity and nature of their gender identity but fundamentally never experience themselves as a man (Genderfae).
  • Others fluctuate similarly but conversely never experience themselves as a woman (Genderfaun).
  • Still others fluctuate across many areas but never reach such a strong female or male identification that they would perceive themselves as a man or woman (Genderflor).
  • Genderflux is when a person perceives a specific gender identity within themselves but fluctuates strongly in its intensity. For example, they may feel more or less like a man, demiboy, or libramasculine at different times. Or conversely, they may feel more or less like a woman, demigirl, or librafeminine.
  • In contrast, with fluidflux, a person does not fluctuate within one gender alignment but stands between two gender alignments and fluctuates between them. For example, they may feel sometimes more like a man and sometimes more like a woman. Accordingly, they fluctuate from woman, demiboy, librafeminine to man, demiboy, and libramasculine.
