Online Dating for Atheists and Agnostics at Consonance (Gleichklang)
At Consonance (Gleichklang), we care deeply about supporting the partner search and friend search of our atheist and agnostic members. In our matchmaking and friend matching, we record our members’ attitudes toward various religions, spirituality, atheism, and agnosticism.
Subsequently, partner suggestions and friend suggestions are made based on the principle of matching fundamental attitudes. This creates long-term, productive, and happy partnerships and friendships among members of our dating community.
Atheism and Agnosticism at Consonance (Gleichklang)
20% of members in our dating community identify with agnosticism or atheism. Atheism and agnosticism are closely linked among Consonance members:
- Typically, atheist members view agnosticism positively and vice versa.
- Most agnostic and atheist members are critical of all religions, as well as spirituality and esotericism. In contrast, our atheist and agnostic members generally have very positive attitudes toward the natural sciences.
- Many atheist and agnostic members want to meet like-minded people in their partner search and friend search. As partners or friends, they want to get to know other people with atheist and/or agnostic attitudes. For almost all atheists, agnostics are just as suitable as atheists. Likewise, for most agnostics, an atheist person is also suitable for a partnership or friendship.
- For some other atheists or agnostics at Consonance, however, religious affiliation or attitude toward religion plays no role in their partner search or friend search. These people do not want to conduct their partner search and friend search based on religious affiliation or attitude toward religion. Our members decide this themselves.
What Do Atheism and Agnosticism Mean?
- Atheism, in a strict interpretation, denies the existence of God, gods, or deities. Agnosticism states that it is impossible to make truth statements about religious beliefs.
- In a milder interpretation, atheism approaches agnosticism by not excluding the existence of God, gods, or deities. But it states that this existence cannot be positively affirmed.
- In a very strict interpretation, atheism can be understood as the denial of any religion that refers to supernatural phenomena. In this strict sense, it does not matter whether a religion recognizes a god or not. Such atheists deny any form of spirituality.
- Depending on the strictness of interpretation, atheism and agnosticism may merge or not. Both are incompatible with the positive affirmation of God-centered religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or belief in Hindu deities.
- A mild interpretation of atheism, however, can be compatible with affirming Buddhist rules of faith, magical rituals, or other practices oriented toward the supernatural. This applies when such practices do not relate to God, gods, or deities.
- Agnosticism makes it impossible to affirm any religion as a matter of certainty. For some, however, the hope for a spiritual reality remains.
- In a mild interpretation, agnosticism is compatible with all religious practices if it is conceded that these are only based on hope, but that no statements can be made about ultimate reality.
Our Dating Offer for Atheists
Our matchmaking and dating community supports atheist and agnostic members in their partner search and friend search. Atheist or agnostic members who value the consideration of their atheist or agnostic life attitude in partner selection receive suggestions of similarly minded people. Likewise, there are members who can imagine partnerships and friendships with followers of all religions, atheists, or agnostics. Our members decide this themselves.
This is how matching at Consonance works regarding religions:
- We ask all members about their affirmation of religious beliefs or attitudes toward various religions on a five-point scale from strong denial to strong affirmation: Atheism, Agnosticism, Baháʼí, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Shintoism, esoteric religiosity.
- We ask all members how important it is for their partner search that the other person has a positive attitude toward the beliefs of a particular religion or toward atheism and agnosticism.
- In matchmaking and friend matching, people who place great importance on a positive attitude toward the beliefs of a particular religion or toward atheism or agnosticism are preferably suggested to those who share this view.
For the friend search and partner search of atheists and agnostics, this means the following:
- Atheists and agnostics who place great importance on a positive connection to atheism or agnosticism receive suggestions from people who have the same positive connection to atheism or agnosticism.
