At Consonance (Gleichklang), we also support the partner search for agender individuals. Agender individuals can enter their gender as non-binary and specify in their free-text self-description that they experience themselves as agender.
They will then receive suggestions from people who are interested in a partnership with non-binary individuals, many of whom will also be open to a partnership with an agender person.
This way, effective dating for agender individuals becomes possible with us.
What is Agender?
Conscious Gender Identification Fluctuates for Everyone
Psychologically, the significance and current perception of our gender varies over time and across situational contexts. This may sound a bit difficult to understand at first, but can be illustrated well:
- There are situations and times when we are very aware that we are a man, a woman, or a non-binary person. For example, when we are at a urological examination of our male sexual organs, the presence of these sexual organs and what we associate with them is strongly activated in our memory.
- When we have sex with another person, it may also activate and intensify our perception of the role we typically experience during sex.
- Conversely, however, it can also happen that we experience ourselves simply as a human being while eating, for example, and in that moment our gender does not matter at all. Numerous other situations are conceivable where gender plays no role in our experience.
Agender Individuals
Just as the acuteness, awareness, and role of gender fluctuates in intensity for all of us, there are also people who do not experience themselves as a gender or, in other words, do not identify with any gender.
This does not mean that they do not have primary, secondary, or tertiary sexual organs of one sex or, in the case of intersexuality, of both sexes. But in their own self-definition and perception as a person, this plays no or at most an insignificant role for these individuals.
Such people are called agender individuals. They experience and identify themselves as human beings rather than as a gender. Some of them also wish for a society where all people are perceived as human beings and not as genders.
Agender individuals can, of course, undergo urological or gynecological examinations, for example. Agender individuals can also have sex.
The difference from other people is simply that they otherwise do not assign their physical sex characteristics any significant role for their identity and also do not psychologically identify with a gender.
Most differences between people are quantitative, meaning there are people who have more or less of a characteristic, with most people often falling in the middle.
Agender individuals are on the side of minimal expression of gender identification up to the complete absence of any identification. Conversely, there are also people for whom identification with their gender plays an enormously large, above-average role.
Neutrois are understood as people within the agender spectrum who also place great value on being perceived as gender-neutral in their external presentation. For these individuals, the presentation of gender characteristics through their own person is negatively charged. This is by no means true for all agender individuals.
From a queer perspective, people are granted the right to individuality and diversity is permitted. This is positively valued as acceptance of difference and appreciation of all.
Agender Spectrum
Since most differences between people are quantitative, a spectrum can be identified within the agender area, which is referred to as the agender spectrum.
In this spectrum, there are people who almost never perceive themselves as a gender, but there are also people who occasionally and weakly identify with a gender. Some fluidity can exist here. To be described as agender, however, identification with a gender as an expression of one’s own personal identity must generally play only a minor role.
The term libragender has been introduced for this:
- Librafeminine individuals are located in the agender spectrum but perceive a certain feminine side within themselves that is incipient, diffuse, or fluctuating. Conversely, libramasculine individuals are located in the agender spectrum but perceive a certain masculine side within themselves that is incipient, diffuse, or fluctuating.
- Librafeminine individuals experience themselves as significantly less feminine than demigirls. Libramasculine individuals experience themselves as significantly less masculine than demiboys.
- Agenderflux describes an experience, which can also be adopted as an identity, in which people experience themselves as completely agender at some times, but at other times, for example, as librafeminine or libramasculine.
Agender individuals are assigned to the overarching category of non-binary individuals, as they fall outside the system of purely binary genders due to their absent or minimal gender identification. Accordingly, they do not experience themselves as women or men, neither as cis women or cis men, nor as trans men or trans women.
Matchmaking for Agender Individuals at Consonance (Gleichklang)
At Consonance, we enable effective online dating for agender individuals or individuals in the agender spectrum with librafeminine or libramasculine gender or with agenderflux through the consideration of the non-binary category via matching and the self-selection of participants through their self-description.
Diversity and inclusion are close to our hearts, which is why we do everything in our power to support people of all genders and legitimate sexual orientations. Agender individuals can conduct a wide variety of searches at Consonance, like all other members:
- Agender individuals may search skoliosexually if they are primarily or only interested in other non-binary or agender individuals.
- But an androsexual (search for male characteristics) or gynosexual search (search for female characteristics) is equally possible.
- Agender individuals can also—like everyone else—search for binary women, binary men, intersex individuals, or people with trans identity (trans women, trans men).
- Likewise, a pansexual or omnisexual partner search is possible for agender individuals with us.
A specific gender does not determine one’s own sexual or romantic orientation. Therefore, each individual member can define their own search at Consonance.
Just as we enable a partner search for agender individuals, the same consideration applies within the friend search we also offer.
