Marriage is not outdated
A large-scale European comparative study recently examined how attitudes toward marriage and non-marital cohabitation have developed in several European countries over the past 15 years. Among other things, the study analyzed agreement with the statement that marriage is an outdated institution, as well as acceptance of living together without marriage:
- The results clearly show that attitudes toward marriage do not uniformly move in the direction of declining importance. Instead, changes are differentiated: in some cases, skeptical attitudes increase, in others attitudes remain stable or marriage is even revalued. At the same time, acceptance of non-marital cohabitation remains high or continues to rise in all countries studied.
These findings align well with a recent U.S. study on marital aspirations among young adults from the LGBTQ+ spectrum. This study likewise shows that marriage wishes and motives are far from homogeneous. Some respondents associate marriage strongly with symbolic recognition, legal protection, and social legitimacy in relation to family and the wider social environment. Others, however, experience marriage as less important and see it only as one possible form of relationship.
Recent research shows that marriage continues to play a relevant role for many people and is even gaining importance again in some countries.
