Our online dating is open to people of all religions, beliefs, and spiritual orientations. Accordingly, people with an interest in esoteric teachings and practices are of course welcome at Consonance (Gleichklang) and are supported by us in their partner search and friend search.
The support we provide results from our psychological matching algorithm, with the help of which we introduce those people to each other in matchmaking and friend matching who exhibit compatibility of values and life principles. This can also include esoteric beliefs and practices, with our members themselves deciding whether they want esotericism to be taken into account or not.
This is our approach to deriving partner suggestions and friend suggestions:
- We ask all our members whether they engage with esoteric teachings and practices.
- We also ask all members whether they would like to get to know esoterically oriented people or not.
- In our matching, we compare these inputs with each other in order to suggest members to each other whose basic orientations harmonize.

Meaning of Esotericism
Esotericism is understood as spiritual currents, attitudes, beliefs, or practices that are not accessible to everyone but often remain hidden. In Anthroposophy – also an esoteric school – it is less about the secret character than the selected and exclusive character of those who engage with it. What all followers of esotericism have in common is that they strive for a higher knowledge of the world and a deeper self-experience and self-realization. In Western industrialized countries, esotericism has gained numerous followers in recent decades, also as an expression of dissatisfaction and frustration with a society increasingly oriented toward material values and consumption. A significant inspiration for many of the newer esoteric and New Age teachings came from Eastern philosophy and religiosity, with particularly strong influences from Hinduism, Buddhism, but also Shamanism.

- 29% of Consonance members consider it important that partners are interested in esoteric teachings.
The distinction between religion, spirituality, and esotericism is not sharp:
- In fact, in religious studies, esoteric teachings are understood as religious teachings, and the field of esotericism accordingly falls within the competence of religious studies.
- To varying degrees, esoteric Consonance members also feel connected to the major religions, with many being interested in several religions and some in all religions.
- Atheist and agnostic members, in contrast, are generally critical of esoteric teachings and practices.
In a survey in Germany from 2012, 40% affirmed astrology or the possibility of spiritual enlightenment. Almost 50% of West Germans believed in miracles and one in four believed in reincarnation. In this respect, it can be assumed that the proportion of those interested in esotericism at Consonance roughly corresponds to the proportion in the general population.
Some social scientists and skeptics demand a strict demarcation from any form of esotericism, which is accused of irrationality. However, in our view, such a position is hardly comprehensible and inconsistent if it does not then also include all religions. After all, the statements of faith of, for example, Christianity or Hinduism do not differ with regard to their rationality or scientific nature from esoteric teachings. A selective demarcation from esoteric teachings therefore objectively corresponds to an irrational exclusion due to its selective character and thus a discrimination against large sections of the population.
At Consonance, in the sense of transparency, fairness, and equal treatment, we distance ourselves from right-wing esotericism with its racism, antisemitism, ethnic nationalism, homophobia, or transphobia, just as we do from the same dangers of other religious and fundamentalist belief systems. Such or comparable tendencies can be identified in the historical development and present of all belief systems, and any selective reference and exclusion is not helpful.
Are there connections between political attitudes, spirituality, and esotericism among Consonance members?
To answer this question, we examined the correlations between spirituality and esoteric practices with appreciation for social justice and environmental protection, as well as with traditionalism (indicator for conservatism). We find positive correlations between spirituality, social justice, and environmental protection, but a null correlation between spirituality and traditionalism among our members. Esoteric practices correlated positively with environmental protection and traditionalism but showed no correlation with social justice.
Accordingly, spiritually interested members have a slightly higher interest in social justice and environmental protection, while followers of esoteric teachings at Consonance have a higher interest in environmental protection and a higher traditionalism.
However, all these correlations were so small that they could explain at most 1.5% of the differences among our members in their political attitudes and are therefore practically almost trivial. Thus, from knowing the spiritual or esoteric orientation of our members alone, practically nothing can be inferred about their political attitudes.
This finding is consistent with a survey on our portal vegan.eu, where, for example, 85.1% of surveyed esotericists affirmed equal rights for homosexuals, 82.1% advocated for refugees and an end to isolation, 96.7% advocated overcoming patriarchal structures, and 80.7% affirmed the emancipation of transgender and third gender. These percentages of approval were comparable or only moderately or slightly lower than the corresponding figures from followers of other religious systems.

We differ from dating apps or dating sites for esotericists through our diverse and inclusive character. By no means are predominantly or exclusively people with esoteric beliefs present with us.
