Partner Search with a Handicap
With Consonance, we give our disabled and non‑disabled members the opportunity to communicate with each other, get in touch, build friendships, and find the love of their lives.
The foundation of our dating for people with disabilities is the acceptance principle:
- We ask all of our members without exception whether they are willing and interested in building a partnership with a disabled member. Our disabled members are then only suggested those people where this willingness and acceptance exist from the outset. This makes the partner search for people with disabilities, impairments, and illnesses significantly easier and, in particular, avoids painful disappointments and rejections.
Inclusion or Exclusion in Dating for People with Disabilities?
Consonance (Gleichklang) is committed to breaking down barriers between disabled and non‑disabled people. But does the acceptance principle not lead to exclusion by preventing people from getting to know each other from the start?
- On the one hand, this question must be answered in the affirmative, which implies an undesirable side effect of our approach. On the other hand, this exclusion is not created by Consonance, and the approach ultimately serves primarily the members with handicaps, who want to be sure that they will not be rejected solely because of their disability or impairment.
- To reduce exclusion, Consonance measures acceptance for a disabled partner quantitatively, with the scale ranging from strong rejection, through indecision, to strong affirmation of acceptance.
- While rejections exclude a suggestion, suggestions can still be made in the case of indecision if other compatibility criteria are met.
Consonance also wants to encourage its non‑disabled members to think about not ruling out the possibility of a partnership with a disabled person from the start, but rather opening themselves up to that possibility. Due to the emphasis on tolerance and human togetherness, Consonance also attracts more people who have this readiness.
Finding a Friend with a Disability
At Consonance (Gleichklang), matchmaking and also the facilitation of friendships operate on the acceptance principle:
- As a result, people with disabilities can get to know both people with and without disabilities.
Since acceptance of disabilities correlates with the fact that most members with handicaps have a high acceptance of disabilities, this also increases the chances of specifically getting to know other people with disabilities.
We Implement the Wishes of Our Members with Handicaps and Disabilities
The special matchmaking service for people with disabilities was introduced by Consonance as a direct response to corresponding wishes expressed to us by people with disabilities. We are convinced that disabled people have a right to want to avoid being rejected solely because of their handicap. At Consonance, each disabled member decides for themselves whether they only want to be suggested other members who have affirmed the acceptance criterion, or whether this possible restriction of suggestions should not be applied.
