A Novel Matchmaking System at Consonance (Gleichklang)
In modern matchmaking today, the personality test has become standard. But matching based on personality can be misleading, says Prof. Dr. Bernhard Taureck, spokesperson for the dating portal Consonance.de. Because an alignment in personality is worthless if there are irreconcilable differences in specific preferences or life circumstances.
No one would think of introducing a heterosexual man to a man just because their personalities match. A gay man would not be matched with a woman. Cat allergy sufferers may find themselves confronted with a cat fan as their supposed dream partner. Esotericists are brought together with rationalists, luxury-loving consumers with ecologists.
To solve these problems, the psychological dating portal Consonance.de has now introduced a novel matchmaking system. This new approach takes preferences into account just as strongly as similarities. Consonance (Gleichklang) is the first dating site to implement this combination principle through its novel matchmaking system.
The Consonance (Gleichklang) matching distinguishes between hard and soft preferences. If a member states, for example, that their partner must absolutely be a vegetarian, then only vegetarians are offered as suggestions. If, on the other hand, a member states that it would be nice if their partner were a vegetarian, vegetarians are preferentially suggested as well. However, non-vegetarians are also suggested if there is a particularly high match in other criteria.
This novel matchmaking system is made possible by a complex mathematical method developed by the dating portal’s mathematician, Helmut Steinke, using the theory of fuzzy sets. This set theory, originally developed by L.A. Zadeh in 1965, allows for better consideration of the fuzziness of human preferences. Strong preferences are treated as hard boundaries, weak preferences as soft boundaries. The strength of a preference is specified by the members themselves.

For the new Consonance matching, it also holds true that similarity of character is the fundamental prerequisite for a successful partner choice. After all preferences have been considered, a personality matching is then conducted in a second step. This ensures that, in addition to preference compatibility, there is also overall personality compatibility.
