Note:

The word gay or gay man is the most common and customary term in the German language for a homosexual man. In contrast, homosexual women are not referred to as gay but as lesbian or lesbians. The term gayness indicates that a given man is gay, i.e., homosexual. Terms such as gay, gays, gay man, or gayness are accepted self-designations within the homosexual movement and the gay scene, which is why they are also used by Consonance. In more formal language, one tends to speak of homosexual, homosexual man, homosexual woman, or homosexuality, although these terms have only gained very limited acceptance in the gay scene. An exception, however, is the abbreviation homo, which is occasionally used. Thus, the homosexual scene is referred to not only as the gay scene but also as the homo scene. Likewise, alongside the more typical designations such as gay bar, gay sauna, gay magazine, or gay bar, gay sauna, gay magazine, one also speaks of homo bar, homo sauna, or homo magazine.

In the English-speaking world – and increasingly also adopted into German – the word Gay has now largely become established as a term for homosexual. This means that an explicitly positively connoted word is used for the designation of homosexuals, since gay also means something like happy. The word Gay is a term that includes both gay men and lesbians, a synonym for homosexuality, and thus more broadly defined than the word gay (schwul), which exclusively refers to homosexual men, but not homosexual women.

Another term for homosexuality is same-sex orientation, which sounds more neutral than gay (schwul), a term that sometimes triggers associations with words like sultry and is therefore not always perceived as neutral or positive. In addition, the terms homophile and homophilia are also used to make it clear that being gay or homosexuality is far more than a purely sexual orientation, but goes beyond to include emotional aspects. Finally, from the English-speaking world, there is also the term queer, which has found a rather cautious reception in Germany, although one does speak of a Queer Culture.

Overall, however, it can be said that the terms homosexual, gay (schwul), gay (engl.), queer, same-sex, and homophile refer to the same facts, although the terms homosexual, gay (engl.), queer, same-sex, and homophile – in contrast to the term gay (schwul) – also include lesbian women.

Terms that are clearly associated negatively are sometimes also used, such as fag and poof, although in a playful sense, gay men themselves and within the gay scene also use these terms. The term gayness (Schwulität) is also generally used rather negatively. The term queen, also often associated more negatively, is used for a gay man who appears feminine, although this term is also frequently used by gay men themselves.

There are other terms for being gay and homosexuality, but these are used much less frequently. What is undisputed today is that homosexuality or being gay are to be regarded as completely normal and healthy forms of sexual orientation, just like heterosexuality and bisexuality. Nevertheless, gay men and lesbian women are still subjected to discrimination worldwide, ranging from the denial of marriage rights to the death penalty. Even today, gay men still have to struggle more than heterosexual couples for social recognition, and they still face numerous forms of discrimination in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, for example also in child adoption.

Consonance (Gleichklang) sees itself as part of the gay scene, Queer Culture, or the gay and lesbian scene, by consistently advocating for the building of stable partnerships between gay men and lesbian women. In addition to the gay partner search and the lesbian partner search (see also: homosexual partner search), we also offer a special form of bisexual partner search.
